How to make a Koi Pond

Most people enjoy sitting next to koi ponds but very few know how to make one. Here are my experiences with making a koi pond.

Step 1: You need to decide on where the pond should be located and how big it should be.

Step 2: You need to decide on the size and design of the pond.  You can be creative and come up with a design of your own or buy a prefabricated pond at either Lowes or Home Depot.  If you design it yourself, you will need to purchase a pond liner that fits the design that you created.  The easiest way to come up with your own design is to lay a garden hose on the ground in a design that you like.

Step 3: You need to dig a hole that fits your design or the prefabricated pond that you purchased.  With your own design, you will need to decide on how deep to dig your hole.  I would recommend between 2-3 feet deep and make it with different levels of depths.

Step 4: Once the hole is completed, then you will need to decide on a filtration system for the pond.  This is determined by the size of the pond.  This will be discussed in greater detail in my next blog.

Step 5: Fill your pond with water and allow it to age or treat it with stress coat in order to make the water safe for Koi fish.

Step 6: Buy several small Koi fish to start and after several weeks, you can introduce several more Koi to your pond.

Last Step:  Landscape your pond to your liking with different plants, rocks  and a bench to sit back and enjoy your new ornamental Koi pond.
